ENCTS Bus Pass

For complete details of ENCTS bus pass entitlement and conditions of usage please see your Local Authority website.

This website provides a convenient method of applying for the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) bus pass as an alternative to applying by post or in person. During the online application process, it may be, in some rare cases, that the application cannot proceed to completion via this route and you may be asked to contact your Local Authority instead.

Entitlement to an ENCTS bus pass is by having reached the age of entitlement for receipt of the state pension (previously this was specifically the age at which a female could be in receipt of state pension but the state pension age has now been equalised regardless of gender). Alternatively, the bus pass entitlement can be on the basis of having a qualifying disability.

Although the ENCTS bus pass is a national scheme your application must be made to the Local Authority within which you are primarily resident. Responsibility for bus pass administration can be at County council level, in a two-tier local government area, or Unitary council level in a single tier local government area. This website will use your postcode to check that you are applying under the correct local authority; where necessary by referencing OS OpenData. (Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right 2024).

There are three types of bus pass application. These are:

  • application for a New pass (first pass as resident of this Authority)
  • application for a Renewal pass (as the existing pass has expired or is soon to expire)
  • application for a Replacement pass (necessitated by the existing pass having been lost or damaged).

It is entirely at Local Authority discretion which of these possible types of application to allow via this website.

Just as when applying by post or in person (for a New pass), copies of supporting documentation will be needed as evidence of address and age, for age-based applicants, or evidence of address and nature of disability for disability-based applicants. Similarly, a passport-style identity photo will be required. For the online applicant this means, as part of the application process, being able to upload scanned or photographed copies of a personal photo and relevant sections of appropriate documents. Note that for Renewal applications photo/documentation upload will not always be necessary but may be called for by the system depending on individual circumstances.

All submitted applications will be reviewed by a member of staff to ensure, where necessary, provision of a suitable photograph and valid documentation before being forwarded for production. Having an email address is therefore mandatory for using this website as, following staff review, it may be necessary to request upload of a more suitable photograph or more acceptable evidence documentation.

Functionality

The My Bus Pass online system has been tested on PCs and laptops under various versions of operating system and a range of browsers. It has also been tested using tablets and smart phones. Nevertheless, its functionality on every device/browser/operating system environment cannot be guaranteed so existing alternative methods of application (eg. postal or, in some areas, in-person) are still available.
